Give me a minute…

Just back from a few days away so nothing ready to go out just yet, here’s some music to keep you going though, Esperanza Spalding’s newest video and her talking about the “Chamber Music Society” project.

Be Right Back

Since I’m still trying to muster the will to blog, here’s a pretty diversion to keep you occupied.

Essential Listening

Perhaps one of the most interesting artists I’ve seen in a long time, if not generally, Janelle Monae will finally be releasing her first full-length album tomorrow. A follow on from her fantastic EP, ‘The Chase Suite’, ‘The ArchAndroid’ is essentially two suites stitched together, hopefully furthering the coherence she’s already shown. Monae has an integrity and infectious quirkiness that she is rather boldly unwilling to cede in order to gain popular recognition.

The concept continues to tell the story of Cindy Merryweather, an android in the futuristic city of Metropolis who is hunted down simply for falling in love with a human, yet despite the perhaps lofty aspirations, from the limited listens I’ve had to the album itself (having heard ‘Tightrope’, ‘Cold War’ and ‘Make the Bus’), she has an inherent ability to infuse different genres and styles without masking the message of the lyrics or similarly letting them drown out the rhythm.

Punk, R&B, Hip-Hop, Pop, Rock, Reggae, nothing is out of bounds and all flow into one another with an ease that is undeniably original in its swagger and intelligence, without ever boarding on cocky or too high-brow. Eccentric yet entirely comfortable and forward-thinking.

Buy it. And while you’re at it, get ‘The Chase Suite’ too, because more of these artists need to be encouraged.

New N.E.R.D

With their new album ‘Nothing’ out June 15th, N.E.R.D released their first track Hot-n-Fun to youtube the other day. Featuring Nelly Furtado, it is a mild return to form for them to their more non-synth roots after the rather inconsistent ‘Seeing Sounds’. The beat has potential but again plays up on the repetitiveness that has marked their recent work and without any real hook even at the bridge, it’s certainly not illustrating what made them such well known producers and artists in their own right.

Sa-Ra

Only a few hours…

Till Erykah’s new album is out, but for now here is the new video for ‘Window Seat’

New Erykah

Normally I hate Lil Wayne even featuring in a song (except for his part in Robin Thicke’s ‘Tie My Hands’) but this is off the hook.
Erykah’s latest album, ‘New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)’ drops 30.03.2010
